The “Republic of Užupis” neighborhood is in the capital of Lithuania, Vilnius. It is in the old town of the city, just across the Vilnia river. Uzupis means „to the other side of the river“ in Lithuanian language, and this neighborhood declared its independence on 1st of April, 1997.
Many years ago, Užupis was the Jewish neighborhood in Vilnius, but when the world war started, this was to razed during the Holocaust. During much years, this part of the city was the marginal district, and the consequence was some artist people want to live in there because they saw the possibility to do their life.
It’s one of the places that you have to go because it is very interesting, and it has much charm thanks to the artists; they did this place another and a different place. This district starts just in the bridge, where you can see the poster that says “Republic of Užupis” in different languages. On this bridge, you can find a siren and different pictures on the wall next to the river.
It’s very important that you lose you at the different streets, where you will find artworks, statues, galleries, craft shops, supermarkets, libraries, and some charm restaurants offering typical Lithuanian dishes to you.
About the environment: it’s a beautiful place and very nice to walk, it’s very clean, quiet with some green places and a nice river that surrounds the neighborhood. All these things do that this republic is a perfect place to live, to visit, to work, etc. In relation to the prices, I have to say that it isn‘t the most economical place in t he city, but I think that it’s important to visit it.
One of the curious things also is their constitution, I recommend that you will read it. It’s very original. You will find it hanging on one of the streets.
So I animate you to that you will come and discover more of the “Republic of Užupis”!!!
I like article 13 of its constitution.
13. A cat is not obliged to love its owner, but must help in time of need
I think all cats lover their owner because they want to. So they bring him/her little mice and birds – even out of time of need!
