Three Crosses (in Lithuanian language “Trys kryžiai”) is a memorial monument situated on the top of the Hill of Three Crosses, in the city of Vilnius. The monument is composed by three white concrete crosses which have become more than a monument. They are also a symbol of Lithuanian identity.
According to the tradition, seven Franciscan monks were tortured to death on the top of the hill in the 14th century, and three wooden crosses were placed there in their memory during the 17th century.
In 1916 three modern crosses designed by the Lithuanian architect and sculptor Antanas Vivulskis were built in this place. This original monument was demolished by the Soviet authorities in 1950, and replaced by a new one in 1989, this time designed by Henrikas Kęstutis Šilgalis.
The monument is really impressive, but no less impressive is the spectacular panorama to the Old Town of Vilnius that you have from the hill.
If you visit the city I highly recommend you to come here and to enjoy the beautiful forest around the hill and the enchanting promenade along the Neris river.
Very interesting!!
I will sureley go there!
I would like to visit you in Vilnius to see all these interesting things.
